Saltdean Lido

‘In the roaring ’30s, art deco shrines to swimming and sun-worshipping sprang up across the land. This is a particularly glorious example, with its elegant, curved lines - rather like a stately ocean liner.’

Britains Top 10 Lidos - Time Out 1,000 things to do in Britain

Designed by R W H Jones and built in 1938 to sit alongside his Ocean Hotel, the Saltdean Lido together with its converted health club are one of the many highlights that Saltdean has to offer. Originaly opened to offer provisions for 500 locals and holiday makers an alternative to public bathing, Saltdean Lido was now stands supreme as a symbol of the ‘thirties, symbolising as it did then, unashamed modernity, fashionable chic, youthful healthy activity and the cult of sun worship.

“Taken and adapted from ‘Sun, Fun and Crowds - Seaside Holidays Between the Wars’ by Steven Braggs and Diane Harris, published by Tempus Publishing Ltd”

The main building behind is a two storey block, featuring a café with curved metal windows in its centre. Forming curved wings on either side of the café are the changing rooms on the ground floor and the sun terraces above these. Many of these design features can be seen mirrored within the Grand Ocean.
